The drop dead beautiful, steep walled New River Gorge has some of the biggest whitewater in West Virginia. A very good place to get ready for Gauley Season. We will have one guided raft available on Sunday so this could be a good opportunity to share a paddling weekend with someone who doesn't kayak or is not ready for the Gorge. Many other activities are available in the area for non-paddling friends/family as well. Anything from hiking, biking, rock climbing, visiting historical sites to antique shopping. Bring the Kids! You can check it out at: New River NP
We will meet up at Rays at 9:00 Saturday and 9:00 Sunday to organize for the Class III/IV Gorge section (Cunard to Fayette Station). Consider this if you're an advanced intermediate with a good roll and looking for a little big-water experience. If someone volunteers to lead, there could be the option for some to run the Class II Upper Section (Thurmond to Cunard) which is great for a practiced beginner/intermediate paddler. Last year, some less experienced kayakers rafted the Gorge on Saturday and then kayaked the Upper Section on Sunday. It's a beautiful stretch of river.
We will camp at Ray’s Campground near Hico, WV, just north of the New River Gorge. (304-658-4386 or Ray’s Campground
Directions to Ray’s: Take the Route 60 exit off of Route 19. Go west on Route 60 for a 100 yards or so to Sunday Road. Take right on Sunday Road and look for Rays Campground a few miles down on the left. We have spots reserved.
Contact me if you plan on coming or have questions. If you want to reserve a spot in the raft please call me as soon as possible as there will be limited space.
